Derek’s Piano & the Power of Presence

At Active Living Adventures, we believe in moments that spark reconnection and rediscovery—where music, friendship, and shared joy remind seniors their stories are still being written.
Three years ago, in Honolulu, a couple named Lydia and Andy moved into a new apartment next door to 98-year-old Derek Peart, a former English pilot. One day, they heard music pouring through the walls. Concerned, they knocked—and discovered Derek playing piano from memory because his hearing aids weren’t working properly. It turned out, music was a deep connection to his past, one nurtured by his late wife.
A friendship blossomed. They started inviting Derek over for pizza and dessert—and treated neighbors to mini piano concerts he performed from memory. These gatherings evolved into a cherished monthly tradition. Derek played, Lydia sang; it became a living, joyful testament to connection, creativity, and memory—reminding everyone that friendship is powerful medicine at any age.

Why It Matters
Art is more than a hobby—it’s therapy. Studies show that creative engagement improves cognitive health, reduces stress, and promotes emotional well-being. For seniors, it’s also a chance to:
-
Build friendships and share stories.
-
Discover talents they thought were lost.
-
Create something meaningful that lives on.
Wellness Through Creativity reminds seniors that every brushstroke, every note, and every creation is a step toward joy, dignity, and renewal.
